How to reinvent your career/business and shift from autopilot to greatness – Part 1

(Instead of having a single article, this month’s topic will be covered in four parts, submitted weekly).

Reinvent
Have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.  They somehow already know what you truly want to become.  (Steve Jobs).

What is your occupation?  Your occupation is what you do for a living, and it can be anything.

Some facts on occupation.  Not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur.  True.  Not everyone wants to be employed.  True.  Being employed is a good springboard for transitioning from a job to a successful career.  True.  It is also a good basis for learning all the tricks of the trade—if you aspire to be an entrepreneur one day.  True.

The difference between being an entrepreneur and being employed is that the former requires you to use your gift, while the latter requires you to use your skills.  Gifts are in born (what you love doing), while skills are acquired (through years of training to perform certain tasks).  Think of a musician and an astronaut.

Skills verses gift.  Skills are dispensable, which means that one day you could be axed if your skills are no longer needed.  On the other hand, your gift cannot be taken away, and will always be there to serve you.

Occupation can be classified in four levels:

  1. You are in it for the sake of getting a salary.
  2. You are in it because you are motivated by the desires of attaining your aspired success, achievements, and status.
  3. You are in it based on your calling that is driven by the people around you, or a burning desire in your heart—so, you do what you do out of a sense of duty or destiny.
  4.  You are in it because it gives meaning to your life.

Where do you stand?  As you ponder on this, tune in next week when we will continue on this topic on ‘How to reinvent your career/business and shift from autopilot to greatness’. We will look at questions to ask to know whether it is time to move from one occupation level to the next.  Much love and all the best!
