Just like a successful company has a strategic plan so should you

The surest way to predict your future is to create it.

“How can it be that some people who run multi-million successful companies can feel lonely and unfulfilled in their personal lives?”, Micah said, as we sat at the hotel lobby waiting for the bus.  We had been at a workshop, and one of the last topics covered was on the importance of developing strategic plans for companies.

The facilitator who gave the presentation on strategic plan was well known to Micah, who knew some of his close relatives, through his wife.  So it turned out that the facilitator runs a very successful business, but did not have a social life.  According to Micah, the facilitator had previously confided to his close friends and relatives about being lonely and occasionally feeling suicidal.  “This is so sad,” I said to Micah, as we boarded the bus.

During the bus ride, Micah and I continued with our discussion on the importance of having a strategic plan, and even went a step further to debate on how the same principles can be applied to improve people’s personal lives.  Someone like the facilitator.  “If it works for companies and makes them prosperous, why would it not work for people?” Micah said in amazement.  So we came up with steps to be taken as follows:

  • Have a vision for your life. This is done by determining what you want in life as years go by.  What is it that if you had would make you feel fulfilled in life?  What is it that you value the most in life?  For example, I want to live in peace, joy, and happiness, have a healthy body and mind, and have spiritual well-being.  The moment you define your vision for life—that very moment becomes the beginning of a sweet journey of you having an intimate relationship with yourself.
  • Have a personal mission statement. This is a declaration you make to yourself, that informs you of what is important to you in life.  It is actions that if you took—you will be able to attain the vision for your life.  And this helps you to live with purpose.  For example, I will always do what brings me contentment, by focusing on positivity and disassociating myself with negativity, and will treat people and animals with respect.
  • Set goals. This simply means listing all the things you want to attain in life before you die.  The easiest way to do this is by categorizing your life into segments such as career or profession, finances, relationships, recreation, spirituality, etc.  One of the surest ways of attaining your goals is to set timelines—that distinguish short term goals from long term goals.

The best way to develop any strategic plan is to put it in writing and to follow through, by taking action towards implementing the set goals.  Why?  Because life is for the living—and we only have one life—therefore we deserve to enjoy it, so just do it!
