How to embrace change and become a better person

It is only by taking action that you will be able to improve your situation.
It is only by taking action that you will be able to improve your situation.

“You are looking so nice my dear, and business seems to be doing well,” I said to Sarah recently, when I took my car to her vehicle repair garage for minor service. “What has changed in this place?,” I asked her, as I gazed around the compound.

Sarah has been a widow for two years. The vehicle repair garage she runs was started by her late husband, and after his death, she was not sure whether she would be able to manage the place. But she knew that she had to, for her own survival, and that of her two children.

“You are asking what has changed in this place?,” she said with a broad smile on her face. “I have”.

You see, in life the only thing that never changes is change. Some people adapt well to change, while others do not—and sadly, those who do not, end up giving up in life.

When change happens in your life, and you continue living as though nothing has occurred—also known as burying your head in the sand—the end result will be self-pity, unhappiness, and fear.

For example, if your status suddenly changed from employed to unemployed, the first adjustment you need to make is cutting-down on your spending. Whenever buying something ask yourself, ‘is this a need or a want’. A need you must have—a want you can do without. The other adjustment you need to make is to fully focus all your energies into finding another source of income.  Do not allow unnecessary distractions to occupy your precious time. I always tell my friends that looking for a job is a full time job.

Steps to help you to deal with change and become a better person.

  • Understand. Change is a normal occurrence in life. Everyone goes through change.
  • Identify. Be very honest with yourself about what exactly has changed in your life.
  • Options. Make a list of the choices you have, in order to effectively deal with the change.
  • Transform. Take immediate action(s) to implement the selected options.
  • Commitment. Make a vow in your heart to do whatever it takes to improve your life, for the better.
