Shape your life’s circumstances—it’s as easy as A, B, C

Where your attention goes energy flows and results show.

There are two schools of thought—one says that you have no control over your life’s circumstances, while another says that you have control.

I come from the school of thought that believes that you have control over your life’s circumstance. I say this because I know people who were born in rich families but ended up being poor, and those born in poor families, and ended up being rich. So, the million dollar question is: Does success in life come from sheer luck or from working smart?

While growing up, Melody, the girl living next door always loved the fine things in life. Good clothes, eating in expensive restaurants, and going on road trips. There is nothing wrong with doing this, you would say, but the only reason why it was exceptional was because we lived in a poor neighborhood. Every school holiday (because Melody was in a boarding school) she came home with new things, as most of her friends came from affluent families (which explained how she could afford to go on road trips).

“I want to be rich and famous”, said Melody, one evening while we sat at the door steps of my house during the school holiday watching the sun go down.

“And how will you become rich and famous?”, I said. Her response took me by surprise. She had a list of things to do in order to improve her life’s situation, and all I can remember her saying was to participate in the next beauty pageant of our neighborhood, win, and use it as a platform to advance her life. Both of us were in our teens, so we did the most natural thing. We laughed about it.

A few months later, Melody won the “Miss Uptown” title, and years later, she become a rich and famous fashion designer in my country, after completing college.

Looking back, I realize that it is the simple things we do in life that make a big difference. Although Melody came from a poor family, she believed that her life’s circumstances would change for the better, because she knew exactly what she wanted. Here are three things I realize helped her to change her life’s circumstances:

  • Know what you want to achieve in life. What is your life’s dream? Melody’s was to be rich and famous
  • Have a plan of things to do to improve your life. Melody’s plan was to participate in the beauty pageant. It may look like a simple thing, but in my view, it is one of the most sure ways for someone from a poor background to become famous—and even rich—depending with how the person makes use of the fame and opportunities which come with the title
  • Implement your plan. It is one thing to have a plan, but it is another to implement it. Melody executed her plan by working smart to prepare for and win the qualifying stages of the beauty pageant, until she got to the finals. How many times do we make good plans but fail to execute them? If you have a good plan but you do not execute it, you are in the same situation as someone who does not have a plan

Years back, I made a list of 115 things I want to do before I die, and interestingly, when I look at the list now, I feel like I need to review it by adding new things. This is how easy it is. Challenge yourself today by making and implementing a list of 10 things you need to do to improve your life’s situation before the end of the year, and the rest as they say, will be history. Good luck!
